What inspires you? People doing their best.
What made you decide to be a salon owner? Because salons are one of the only places in our society where people can be nurtured on a regular basis and getting a haircut is one thing we all have in common regardless of our culture or economic status.
How long have you been in the beauty business? I started working for Aveda in 1988 and have been co-owner of Caruh since 2000.
What contribution do you want to make to the world? I want to change the way the world thinks about beauty. I want people to know that beauty is not about what we look like, but rather about who we are.

How long have you been doing hair? 16 Years
What made you decide to become a hairdresser? Ever since I was a little girl I loved to play with makeup and hair. It was my dad who actually had said that this is something I would be good at, and I should look in to going to Cosmetology school. It’s one of the best things I ever did for myself.
What does beauty mean to you? Beauty to me means laughter, love, joy, sense of peace…it’s not all about the way you look on the outside, it’s how you perceive life around you and what you project on to others.
What excites you? Love, family, the people I surround myself with, travel and doing something I’ve never done before.

What motivates you? Simply to have my efforts lead to happiness.
Why do you change your hair color so often? Hair color and cuts are the easiest, least expensive and most immediate way to create dramatic change in your image. Plastic surgery, new wardrobes and fitness programs may be more permanent, but your hair changing is sometimes just the catalyst for a true change that matters on the inside.
How long have you been cutting hair? since 1995
Why do you love to teach? Being able to share knowledge with others and watch them grow and evolve is amazing. Being able to facilitate when someone is learning something new and seeing it "click" and watching people be proud of their own accomplishments is incredibly gratifying.

What is your favorite book? Creativity by Matthew Fox. One of the most positive and galvanizing call-to-action books I've ever read.
What would you do if you were not a hairdresser? I would love to participate in and facilitate group process leading to greater awareness, compassion, and action for social and environmental justice (reference to Joanna Macy).

What gives you hope? Seeing life spring up in the most unlikely places.

What has been your greatest accomplishment so far? Apart from becoming a mother, of course— finding happiness in a creative career that continually pushes me to grow.
Why do you enjoy working with guests at Caruh? I enjoy the ability to help someone express their personality through their hair color. Studies show that hair, second only to the eyes, is the first thing noticed about you by other people.
How long have you been a hair colorist? November 2001
What is one thing you want to teach your daughter? That beauty is not skin deep.

What is your favorite movie? Under the Tuscan Sun—I watched this movie as I was going through a lot of my own changes and it reminds me there is always a way to start over if you want. It’s made me want to travel to Italy even more.
What do you like best about being in the spa? The relaxing environment and the services I get to provide every day. Being able to nurture and improve the way a person feels is amazing.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their career? Follow your passion. Sometimes finding what keeps you inspired and truly happy can be the hardest part, once that happens everything else seems to support you in your journey.

What is your favorite place in Puget Sound? Too many to decide . . . If the sun is shining my favorite places include Oysterville on the Long Beach Peninsula, Eliza Island in the San Juan’s, Magnuson Beach if I’m in town, and when its raining I’d rather be in Bikram Yoga.
Why work at Caruh when you could work anywhere? Caruh affords me the opportunity to live out my dream of utilizing my skills and experience in an organization that supports beauty, health, and well being, while protecting and sustaining our environment on both individual and global levels. Moreover, every day I am inspired by the talent and vision of my teammates.

When you publish your first book, what will it be about? Real life: road trips, weddings, doctors, convicts, candy bars, dive bars, funerals, and me. It’s guaranteed to make you laugh.
